Dress Shirt Basics - Materials

You can wear a shirt made of anything nowadays, yet 100% cotton is still the best when it comes to breathability and comfort. Poly blends will take more punishment over time yet they pucker rather than wrinkle and with how much moisture the polyester keeps in, you tend to sweat more. Linen is also a popular fabric for shirts yet it will wrinkle much more than cotton and tends to be rougher against the skin… so save linen for the casual shirts.

Like wool, cotton has rougher and smoother versions and for custom dress shirts it can all come down to a question of how thin and how soft you want your shirt. Smoother softer cottons are made with longer fibers, and the finer the fiber the tighter the thread count. Egyptian and Supima being some of the smoothest of the long fiber cottons.
